Releasing Money Guilt: How to Rewrite the Stories Holding You Back
Oct 02, 2025
If you’ve ever felt guilty about charging money for your work, raising your prices, or even just telling people about your business—you’re not alone.
Almost everyone I’ve worked with in sales and entrepreneurship has felt this way at some point. And here’s the most important thing to know: it isn’t your fault.
The guilt you feel around money isn’t a personal flaw—it’s programming. Most of us grew up absorbing cultural, religious, and family stories that told us it’s greedy or selfish to want more, or that making money somehow takes away from others. No wonder it feels heavy!
The truth is, those stories aren’t actually yours. They’re hand-me-down beliefs. And when you recognize that, you can start releasing them with compassion.
In my Energy Mastery work, I teach tools for clearing out this kind of old programming and replacing it with a new, empowering story about money. Instead of feeling trapped by guilt, you can step into alignment with abundance and service.
Why Do We Feel Guilty About Money?
There are three main reasons money guilt shows up again and again:
1. You’re focused on yourself, not your service.
When your attention is only on getting clients or making money, it’s easy to spiral into guilt. But when you shift the focus to the impact you’re creating—how your work helps someone transform—the energy changes completely. Selling starts to feel like serving, because that’s exactly what it is.
2. You compare yourself to others.
“Comparisonitis” (yes, it’s real) convinces you that your work isn’t good enough. But no one else has your exact life experiences, your voice, or your perspective. Even if you were selling the same product as 1,000 others, your clients would still be uniquely yours.
3. You’ve had negative experiences with sales.
Most of us can name a time when a salesperson made us feel pressured or taken advantage of. Those memories stick because of something called negativity bias—our brain’s natural tendency to remember negative experiences more vividly than positive ones. But those bad encounters are only one side of the story. Think about the last thing you bought that you absolutely loved—maybe a pair of shoes, a program, or a piece of art. That’s sales too. By bringing your focus to those positive exchanges, you can retrain your mind to see selling as a natural, valuable, and even joyful part of life.
The Reframe: From Guilt to Growth
Money is simply an exchange of energy. When you charge for your services, you’re not taking from someone—you’re creating balance. People value what they invest in, and your work has the power to change lives.
So the next time guilt creeps in, remember:
• It’s not your fault—it’s old programming.
• You can release it—with compassion, not shame.
• You get to write a new story—one where money and service go hand in hand.
Making money doesn’t have to feel heavy or wrong. With the right tools and awareness, you can release guilt and step fully into abundance.
